The Axe pictured below and characterized in the following specs has been sold ... and the next Feller Dan makes for us could be the same of similar, or quite a bit different. It depends on what you would like him to make. For this first Felling Axe:
Dan used 4140 chromoly steel, which has relatively high amounts of chromium and molybdenum. The 41xx steel aris harder and stronger than standard 1020 steel
Head weighs about 3.3 pounds (1.5 kg)
Overall weight is just over 6 pounds (2.7 kg)
Handle is 35 inches (89 cm)
Helve (handle) is hand-made and fitted by Dan from Ash locally gathered
Leather sheath made by Dan as well.
The head of this axe is fairly thick and heavy through the middle so someone who wants to use this as a Splitting Axe as well as a Felling Axe will be in good shape.
In order to create this new piece Dan needed to first make his own tools. He starts with the basics ... so he made his own new punches and chisels just for this axe before he could even begin work on the axe itself.
